FAQs & Information

Everything You Need to Know About Your Kidney Health

Welcome to our FAQ and Information hub—your go-to resource for understanding kidney health, managing kidney conditions, and navigating your treatment options with ease and confidence.

Your kidneys are like the body’s natural filter system. They work hard every day to remove waste, extra fluids, and toxins from your blood, keeping your body clean and balanced. They also help regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep your bones strong. Think of your kidneys as your body’s own personal water treatment plant!

Kidney dysfunction happens when your kidneys can’t do their job properly. This can lead to a buildup of waste in your body, which can make you feel unwell. There are many possible causes, including diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and certain medications. Sometimes, it can also be due to genetic conditions or long-term diseases. It’s important to catch and treat kidney problems early to avoid further complications.

Improving your kidney health often starts with small changes in your lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and avoiding too much salt can make a big difference. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, managing these conditions with the right medications is crucial. Your doctor might also suggest specific medications to protect your kidneys and prevent further damage. Every little step helps!

Dialysis is a treatment that does the job of your kidneys when they can’t keep up on their own. There are two main types: Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. Hemodialysis uses a machine to clean your blood, usually done at a dialysis center or sometimes at home. Peritoneal Dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter, with fluid being introduced and removed through a tube in your belly. Both methods work well, and your doctor will help you choose the best one for you.

PMB stands for Prescribed Minimum Benefits. These are a set of essential health services that all medical aids in South Africa must cover by law. This includes chronic conditions like kidney disease, ensuring you get the treatment you need, such as dialysis or medications, without having to worry about coverage. Your medical aid is required to pay for these treatments as long as they’re part of the PMB list.

A kidney transplant is when a healthy kidney from a donor is placed into your body to take over the work of your failed kidneys. The process involves several steps, including finding a match, undergoing surgery, and then taking medications to prevent your body from rejecting the new kidney. It’s a big decision, but it can greatly improve your quality of life. If you’re considering a transplant or need more information, Margaret is our go-to person for all things transplant-related. She’s here to answer your questions and guide you through the process. Feel free to reach out to her at [contact details].
